Showing Respect in the Workplace

Respect in the workplace, I believe, is what we all desire to have. The craving for respect was birthed when we were born. It is a substance, a virtue that all humans possess, a valuable good that can be freely given and freely received. A treasure to you and I. In the workplace this is important because it can mean a happy employee working harder for the employer and employees working together unitedly to get things done faster and more efficiently.

Showing respect in the workplace can be achieved by understanding how we are as individuals. As individuals, we desire to be recognized as persons, by our names, our face, our voices, our feelings, our abilities, and our achievements.

As an employer, by giving recognition to someone by remembering their name can mean a boost of morale in the person because they view you as seeing their existence in the company. Because as people, we want to stand out in some way or another to show our uniqueness. The employee who wants to receive respect in the workplace will see that their presence in the employer’s eyes is important and he or she will be empowered to truly make a difference in the company. At the same time, respect in the workplace means employees who show the same kind of respect for one another will more likely work together for the greater good, which protects the well being of each person and also the company’s interests.

We must remember that even though we work in unity, we are still a single unique person who has a voice that wants to be heard because we are important. We are social beings with a brain and heart that has ideas and thoughts and issues that arise personally. When we have thoughts and ideas related to the company, we expect to be heard. When we have problems and issues in the company, wanting to be heard is expecting respect in the workplace. So we should take in consideration what ideas are being suggested, and even consider a person’s complaints.

Respect in the workplace means no persons are the same. So it is a good thing for the employer to recognize each person’s contribution to the company. This is especially valuable because contribution to the company is the employee’s expressed dedication of hard work for the employer. The employer should give an expression of gratitude to the employee as a sign of respect in the workplace.

Respect in the workplace means to see each person as they are, to treat each other the way we want to be treated, to give to one another what we ourselves desire to receive. Respect in the workplace should then automatically come, and with patience the results will show. Remember, to give is more blessed than to receive. The outcome of this gift brings workers and employers together in unity to achieve the company’s goals faster and more efficiently.
